Uno de los temas más frecuentes sobre la vida íntima versa en torno a la frecuencia de relaciones sexuales.

Son muchas las parejas que se preguntan ¿cuánto es lo normal?, pero también son numerosas las que desean aumentar su frecuencia.

Pero, ¿hay una frecuencia normal?
Existe un promedio, pero una norma sexual, no hay. El promedio es de 2.5 veces por semana. La normalidad no existe porque cada pareja es un mundo.
Así que nunca es conveniente mirar qué está haciendo el vecino.

Si para ti está bien una vez por semana y para mí es fantástico y somos felices, no hay que pensar que el vecino lo hace siete veces a la semana.

La sexualidad no se comporta como las otras necesidades físicas en las que la satisfacción de la necesidad calma el deseo. Es decir, cuando tenemos hambre, se nos quita comiendo, pero no funciona exactamente igual con el sexo.

A este respecto, Fisher, investigador canadiense describe que si una persona mantiene, por ejemplo dos coitos, por semana; cuando disminuye su frecuencia a una o menos, inmediatamente siente un aumento en el deseo sexual que lo insta a la intimidad.

Pero si el individuo, por diversas razones, no reasume las relaciones sexuales por un largo periodo, entonces el deseo disminuye y puede llegar hasta desaparecer.

Asimismo, cuando una persona tiene una frecuencia dada, tomemos el mismo ejemplo, dos relaciones por semana y por diversas circunstancias aumenta a siete por semana; inmediatamente siente una saciedad sexual.
Sin embargo, si continua con esa frecuencia, el cuerpo no solo se adapta sino que hasta le pide más.

Un distanciamiento emocional o físico, por ejemplo debido a enfermedades o los conflictos de pareja, pueden provocar una disminución en el deseo sexual.

En esas circunstancias el cuerpo no demanda la vida sexual.

Incluso, al ser superadas las condiciones que provocaron la baja en la vida sexual, la baja de líbido se hace presente por lo que la sexualidad deja de figurar entre sus apetitos y muchas veces se mantiene una vida de pareja como entre hermanos.

Hay una enorme compatibilidad en el cada día pero no hay una necesidad de acercamiento sexual.
 Por lo mismo, quienes quieran mejorar su frecuencia porque pasa mucho tiempo –meses sin sexo- deben hacerlo ya, al principio puede que cueste, pero luego será un verdadero placer.
